The Magic Properties of Garnet Gemstones.

Garnets are the modern birthstone for January and they are given on the 2nd and 6th anniversary. Garnets are associated with strength, perseverity, prosperity, and health.

Some also believe that Garnet is the stone for a successful business. If your business is not as good as it should be, just put 3 or more garnets on your desk. It is believed that if a garnet is put under a pillow it will cure depression. Garnets can be used to make a person popular and have self-esteem when worn as jewellery. It helps protect one on trips. Garnets bring constancy to friendships.

Currently, the world's largest supply of garnets is the continent of Africa. In December 1996, a student in Central Australia discovered what is thought to be the largest single garnet ever found - measuring nearly one hundred feet across! Other sources of garnet include India, Soviet Union, Brazil and the United States.

Opal - October's Birthstone

Opal is the modern birthstone for October and the gemstone gift for the 18th anniversary. Opal has been associated with hope, faith, and confidence. Opal has been a popular gem for many centuries.

Structurally it consists of tiny spheres with water filling the gaps. These spheres in most Opals are irregular in size and inconsistent in concentration. Yet in Precious Opal, the variety used most often in jewellery, there are many organized pockets of the spheres. These pockets contain spheres of approximately equal size and have a regular concentration, or structure, of the spheres. This has the effect of diffracting light at various wavelengths, creating colours. Each pocket produces a different colour, with a different intensity depending on the angle from which a viewer sees it. The multicoloured flashes of light that Opal emits gives it a truly beautiful and valuable look, called a play of light.

The Opal derives its name from the Latin word "opalus," meaning precious jewel. It has been mined for centuries, at least since Roman times when they extracted the opal from areas now within the Czech Republic. The Aztecs made use of local Mexican sources as did the Spaniards when they exported the material back to Europe.

The image above is a classic White Gold, Diamond, and Opal design by our designer Toni Rohm. The opal weight is 12.34 ct . It is a white opal with a fine play of colour. Red and orange is fairly predominate throughout the stone. If you are interested in purchasing this unique piece, please feel free to contact us.

Today most precious opal comes from Australia with significant sources from Mexico and the Western United States.

An alternate birthstone for October is Pink Tourmaline.
